
Mulayam
Singh Yadav, a veteran politician, is a post graduate in Arts from Agra
University. He entered electoral politics in the 1960s and won his first
election in 1967 to become an MLA in UP Assembly. Mr. Yadav has keen
interest in education and agriculture. He was member and manager of
several educational institutions. He has deep interest in wrestling and
has won several awards in it.
Mr. Yadav has always been very sensitive towards social disparities and
problems faced by the people of SC/ST and OBC. He was highly impressed
by the thoughts of the famous socialist and thinker, Dr. Ram Manohar
Lohia was sent to jail in 1954 for the first time for taking part in
Lohia's Nahar Rate Movement. Thereafter, he was sent to jail on many
occasions for taking part in various movements and he has spent over
three years in jail.
Mulayam Yadav was elected as the chief minister of UP for the first time
in 1989 and continued till 1991. Then, in 1992, he founded the Samajwadi
Party. He got a second chance as UP chief minister from 1993-95 and also
held the post from 2003 to 2007. He won his first Lok Sabha elections in
1996 and became the Union Defence Minister. He was re-elected to the Lok
Sabha in 1998, 1999 and 2004 but did not resign as Uttar Pradesh chief
minister.
