Hat trick win for Sheila Dikshit and Congress in Delhi assembly
elections
Sheila Dikshit has been elected as the CM of Delhi for the third
consecutive term. This makes Mrs Dikshit the longest serving woman chief
minister in India. This time, Congress has won 42 seats in comparison to
the 23 seats of BJP. Leading Congress to a hatrick win, she induced a
woman in her cabinet while retaining most of the ministers.
With her charisma and 10-year governance, Mrs Dikshit has proved that
she is the unmatched leader of Congress leaving her detractors
red-faced. This hatrick win of Congress in Delhi has created a history,
overcoming anti-incumbency and fear of Mumbai terror attacks costing its
votes.
Sheila Dikshit, along with all six members of her cabinet emerged
victorious, though five sitting MLAs lost their position. The woman
power has shrunk to three, including Dikshit in the Assembly. Besides
Sheila Dikshit, Barkha Singh from R K Puram and Kiran Walia from Malviya
Nagar were elected. Five muslim members were also elected to the new
Assembly including Deputy Speaker Shoaib Iqbal and Transport Minister
Harun Yusuf.
Shiela takes oath as Delhi Chief Minister
On December 17th, 2008, Delhi's new Cabinet was affirmed at Raj Niwas
by Lt Governor Tejinder Khanna with Shiela Dikshit taking the oath as
the Chief Minister for a third time. Kiran Walia has been selected in
the Cabinet for the first time while most of the ministers retain their
posts. Several MLAs, Congress MPs and Municipal Councillors were there
to attend the function.
After the oath ceremony, Dikshit said, We have to continue
the work. We have to respect the mandate of the people which has been
quite historical."
It was a big day not only for Shiela Dikshit but also for Malviya Nagar
MLA Kiran Walia. She raised the women issue and said, "I know
the kind of problems women face from domestic violence, to economic
empowerment, to safety."
Rest of the Cabinet ministry remain the same that includes AK Walia,
Mangat Ram Singhal, Haroon Yusuf, Raj Kumar Chauhan and Arvinder Singh
Lovely. All these members retain their posts and their portfolios are
expected to be announced soon.
